Peko Peko - the sound of an empty stomach (not so empty by the end of it!)

When I get together with a certain group of wonderful friends, we tend to frequent the same haunt; Pacific House on Toorak Rd. Incredible Chinese BBQ; a table laden with goodies, from salt and pepper squid, to peking duck, and prawn stuffed tofu, we all dive in for a shared feast! Tonight, our usual group was halved, and when you don’t have as many mouths to feed, it usually (but not always) tends to mean you order fewer dishes. Why not, on these occasions, venture away from the familiar and go with an unsuspecting Taiwanese spot, which from the outside looks more like a cafe frequented by the 9-5 crowd for a quick lunch.
Enter Peko Peko and you’ll be drawn to the interesting art works dotting the walls, the crowd of figurines lining the cash register, and of course the specials board!

When I dine with a group of people, I enjoy sitting back to see what they order. It’s about the only time I’m happy to relinquish control, just ask Mr Wonderful. This is especially true when said friend has frequented the restaurant for a couple of years. He done good! We shared five spice calamari, custard fried chicken, crispy honey beef, wings, and of course fried rice.
Personally, I love a wing! But the Ma Ma Custard Fried Chicken was the winner for me! When Old Mate ordered custard fried chicken I didn’t know what to expect, but those little balls of chicken covered in a chilli mayo were like little bites of heaven! They took me back to the Chicken Karaage we loved so much in Japan! Seriously, a must try if you ever find yourself at Peko Peko!

As the food slowly trickled out of the kitchen, we made our way through 5 delicious dishes, and could easily have ordered more. The dessert cabinet and it’s earl grey panna cotta, was particularly tempting. But alas, we declined the offer and instead, finished our wines and chats before heading home. Another incredible feed, with incredible friends!
Bring on the next amazing meal!
