Sunshine Getaway to the Gold Coast

I’m still very much in holiday mode. Im struggling to snap out of it and resume ‘life’. Siting here writing about the holiday doesn't help either.
Now this holiday was nothing overly special. A quick 5 day trip up to the Gold Coast with Mr Wonderful and my parents, but it was a long weekend that I think we all really needed. It was the Broadbeach Country Music Festival while we were up there, and these things; with the live music and the people always add a great atmosphere to a place. This was no exception. Walking through Broadbeach there were small (and large) stages set up all over the place, you could chose any number of eateries or watering holes and be surrounded by a positive energy and some pretty decent music.
Until the TV show Nashville came along I didn't really know anything about Country music, hell, I still don’t, but I enjoyed it. As far as the music was concerned, Kasey Chambers was the highlight for me. Despite illness, she and her band put on a great show, and she rocked out The Captain, no surprise there.

Now, down to the reason we’re all here…. If I were to sit down and tell you about all the places we ate and/or drank while we were up here, I wouldn't leave my computer for a few hours! So I’ll keep it to the highlights.
For me no trip to the Gold Coast is complete without a trip to Ace Wasabi’s. My favourite sushi joint EVER! The first time Mr Wonderful took me there, I was sceptical. It’s a very unsuspecting little sushi train joint right next to a 7-11. But as the old adage says, don’t judge a sushi train by it’s location… or something like that.
I think it took us about 25 minutes to stack up 12 plates (all at $3, BTW) of amazing sushi variations. We were stuffed, and ready to head back into Broadbeach for a bit more drinking and music in the sun. There was ALWAYS sun!!!
Over the 5 days that we were on the Gold Coast, we found another favourite, right in the main mall; Harajuku Gyoza and Beer Stadium. This place reminded me how much I fell in love with Takoyaki while Mr Wonderful and I were in Japan last year. The takoyaki (octopus balls) and chicken karaage (Japanese style fried chicken) were superb - I highly recommend that you check it out if you’re on the GC. The name pretty much sums it up; Japanese food, and Beer! Can’t go wrong!
I’m sensing a bit of a theme to this holiday… Japanese and drinking, but there was so much more!
We generally avoid Surfers Paradise like the plague and stick to Broadbeach on our trips up north, however this time we did happen across the Brooklyn Depot which had ah-mazing burgers and I would suggest anyone who enjoys a good burger stop past for a bite to eat.

Broadbeach is wonderful, and at only a 2 and a half hour flight from Melbourne, it makes for a great long weekend escape from Melbourne winter. Heading back to Melbourne was cold (and delayed) but the memories of the food, drink, and music will hopefully be enough to get me through until my next visit. I find I’m never disappointed on a trip up to the Gold Coast.
