When you walk through the gates of anywhere and the first thing you smell is that amazing combination of smoke and meat, you know it's going to be a good night. Welcome to the Melbourne Winter Night Market.

It's a magical time of year when the Queen Victoria Market opens it's doors to vendors and Melbournians for a night of eating, drinking, shopping and socialising. The Summer Night Market is one thing, but coming together during winter with smoking meats, open fireplaces, performers, and a roaming silent disco, right there, you have the makings of a great night!

This sort of thing (large crowds and generally being out of the house on a school night) aren't usually Mr Wonderful's cup of tea, but there was schmoozing to be done, and luckily I was allowed to tag along. Now to be honest, I've only been to the Night market once, it was the summer of 2015... it was good, but this time was better. It must have been the perfect combination of good company, delicious food, open fireplaces and warm cider. Nothing wrong with all that! The biggest downside of the night was when halfway through the queue to the cannoli I'd been drooling over since I first walked by the stand, I realised they only took cash... CASH!!! And I had not a dollar! I was about to give up and head back to Mr Wonderful but I'm not a quitter! So I found an ATM, and went back to queue up all over again (the line had grown by a good 5 metres!). Worth it! That cannoli was pretty great!!

After standing downwind from the brûlée table and smelling that caramelising sugar for 5 minutes, I can't quite put into words the self control it took not to order each type of cannoli plus a pile of creme brûlée for dessert... to share with the group, naturally... I definitely wouldn't have found a new table all to myself and demolish the lot!

Needless to say, I'll be dragging Mr Wonderful along to the Winter Night Market at least once more this season, especially since I left without a necklace I promised myself. I hope you enjoy the evening there as much as we did!
